Principles of Mechanical Component Manufacture (City & Guilds)

Programme Aims:

The purpose of this unit is to enable learners to develop an understanding of a wide range of manufacturing methods for metallic and non-metallic mechanical components. Learners will be able to analyse the manufacturing requirements of mechanical components, compare and select from different manufacturing methods, determine suitable finishing processes for varying component specifications, and identify the requirements for, and methods of, component inspection.
At the end of this module the learner will:

  • understand the modern manufacturing environment
  • understand manufacturing requirements of mechanical engineering products
  • understand methods of mechanical engineering manufacture
  • understand finishing treatments for manufactured parts
  • understand the requirements for product inspection

Entry Requirement

a) International City and Guilds Certificate award (2565) or,
b) National Craft Certificate in the following trades: Aircraft Mechanic, Electrician, Fitter, Heavy Vehicle
Mechanic, Toolmaker, Metal Fabrication, Motor Mechanic or equivalent or,
c) National Certificate in Engineering or,
d) National Certificate in Technology or,
e) Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Certified Manufacturing Technologist Level
